The event was hosted by Mayor Mary Giuliano with the Mayor of Cranbrook, Mr. Wayne Stetski and the mayor of Sparwood, Lois Halko attending. One of the individuals who spoke, Alex Gredzuk was the son of an Internee. His name is not in the list of internees mentioned in Roll Call: Lest we Forget.
Location: St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic church in St. Catharines.
Reception was very nice with sandwiches drinks and sweets with tea and coffee. In attendance was MP (Welland) Malcolm Allen and MPP (St. Catharines) Jim Bradley as well as Mayor Brian McMullan for St. Catharines. Hungarian and Croatian communities, and a priest from the Hungarian community. 150 people were in attendance.
Jane Lapko spoke about her grandmother being interned as a little girl in Spirit Lake. I also have a video of Father Anton speaking at the marker outside.
There was a roll call book placed in the back for people to see if their family names were in the book as well as posters describing what the Internment was. The priest personally planted the trees and flowers by the monument.
